Association between HIV infection and hypertension: A global systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies
BMC Medicine May 18, 2021
Davis K, Perez-Guzman P, Hoyer A, et al. - This is the first global systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the risk of prevalent hypertension among people living with HIV (PLHIV) and HIV-negative people. The studies included a total of 11,101,581 candidates, with data collected between 1985 and 2018. According to the findings, the relationship between HIV status and prevalent hypertension varies by region. The findings emphasize the importance of tailoring hypertension prevention and care to local contexts, as well as the importance of rapidly optimizing integration of HIV and hypertension services in the most affected areas. The role of different hypertension risk factors in driving context-specific trends is unknown, so further cohorts of PLHIV and HIV-negative controls focused on this would be beneficial.
