Association between features of COPD and risk of venous thromboembolism
The Clinical Respiratory Journal Jun 13, 2019
Dong W, et al. - In this retrospective observational clinical study, researchers focused on the link between characteristics of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). This study included 551 consecutive COPD patients who presented at the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine of Tianjin Chest Hospital between February 2014 and April 2018. The inclusion criteria were met by 151 patients, including 29 cases of COPD with VTE, and 121 patients having COPD without VTE. Findings revealed visual emphysema as an independent risk factor for VTE events. In COPD patients, VTE risk increased with the degree of airway obstruction. However, a link between exacerbation frequency and VTE events was not evident.
