Association between e-cigarette use and cardiovascular disease among never and current combustible-cigarette smokers
American Journal of Medicine Jun 06, 2019
Osei AD, et al. - Researchers pooled 2016 and 2017 information from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System—a large, nationally representative, cross-sectional telephone survey—to investigate the connection between e-cigarette use and cardiovascular disease among never- and current combustible-cigarette smokers. The study sample consisted of 449,092 individuals with complete self-reported information on all key variables. Among never-combustible-cigarette smokers, no significant association was found between e-cigarette use and cardiovascular disease. In all, the researchers noted significantly higher odds of cardiovascular disease among dual users of e-cigarettes and combustible cigarettes vs smoking alone. Furthermore, these findings, although preliminary, support the need for longitudinal studies exploring cardiovascular disease risk associated with e-cigarette use, especially among dual users.
