Association between blood pressure variability and myocardial structure and function
JAMA Apr 23, 2020
Nwabuo CC, Yano Y, Moreira HT, et al. - Researchers utilized data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, to examine the link between visit-to-visit blood pressure (BP) variability in early adulthood and myocardial structure as well as function in middle age, in this cohort study. There were a total of 2,400 participants. Higher left-ventricular (LV) mass index, worse diastolic function, higher LV filling pressures, and worse global longitudinal strain were observed in relation to per 1-SD increment, greater visit-to-visit systolic BP variability independent of the mean. Overall, adverse changes in cardiac structure and systolic and diastolic function were observed in relation to greater visit-to-visit systolic and diastolic BP variability, independent of mean BP levels.
