Association between alcohol consumption and survival in colorectal cancer: A meta-analysis

Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Oct 17, 2019

Kim Y, et al. - In this meta-analysis of prospective cohort investigations, researchers quantitatively evaluated the link between alcohol intake and colorectal cancer survival. They analyzed 12 studies including 32,846 patients with colorectal cancer, and used random-effects models to estimate pooled RRs with 95% CIs. Findings revealed better survival in colorectal cancer in relation to light and moderate pre-diagnostic alcohol intake. A dose-response analysis revealed a nonlinear link between pre-diagnostic alcohol intake and all-cause mortality, demonstrating a decrease in RR at < 30 g/day of alcohol intake. Lower risk of death from all-causes and colorectal cancer was observed in relation to wine consumption, but there was a positive link between moderate liquor intake and all-cause death.
