Assessment of plasma total tau level as a predictive biomarker for dementia and related endophenotypes
JAMA May 21, 2019
Pase MP, et al. - Researchers conducted a cohort study of samples from 1,453 Framingham Heart Study candidates and 367 people in the Memento study to examine the usefulness of plasma total tau as a biomarker for dementia and related endophenotypes. Findings suggested that plasma total tau has been linked to dementia endophenotypes and with the risk of incident clinical Alzheimer disease dementia. Overall, the authors concluded that plasma total tau levels can improve future dementia prediction and can be used as a risk stratification biomarker in dementia prevention studies. Higher plasma total tau level was linked with worse cognition across seven cognitive tasks and smaller hippocampi as well as neurofibrillary tangles and microinfarcts at autopsy.
