Assessment of patient burden from dry eye disease using a combination of five visual analogue scales and a radar graph: A pilot study of the PENTASCORE
British Journal of Ophthalmology Dec 19, 2020
Labetoulle M, Benichou J, M’nafek N, et al. - Provided that questionnaires for dry eye disease (DED) will ideally be simple and quick to respond and explore the key aspects of the burden of disease and treatment satisfaction (efficacy and tolerability), researchers sought to test the Pentascore questionnaire for regularly evaluating DED. The algebraic mean (± SE) for Pentascore was 52.6±1.8 for 161 DED patients, the mean radar graph standardized region was 32.1 ± 1.7 (out of 100) and the mean score for OSDI was 52.6 ± 1.8. This pilot study suggests that the Pentascore can quickly and efficiently determine the burden of DED and satisfaction with treatments. Compared with the algebraic mean, radar graph area estimation is likely to boost the sensitivity to detect differences/changes in symptoms and follow-up care.
