Assessment of neutrophil extracellular traps in coronary thrombus of a case series of patients with COVID-19 and myocardial infarction
JAMA Cardiology Apr 15, 2021
Blasco A, Coronado MJ, Hernández-Terciado F, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the role of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in coronary thrombosis in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and myocardial infarction. They assessed a consecutive series of patients with COVID-19 who necessitated primary coronary interventions for ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) in which coronary aspirates were retrieved in the catheterization laboratory using a thrombus aspiration device. Inclusion of a total of five patients with COVID-19 was done (4 men [80%]; mean [SD] age, 62 [14] years). Analysis revealed a high burden of neutrophil extracellular traps (median density, 61%) in the coronary thrombi of these 5 patients, compared with a historical series of 50 patients without COVID-19 (median NET density, 19%), which was a significant difference. Based on findings, they suggest targeting intravascular neutrophil extracellular traps as possibly valuable for treatment and a feasible way to prevent coronary thrombosis in patients with severe COVID-19.
