Assessing barriers to diabetes medication adherence using the information-motivation-behavioral skills model
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Jun 08, 2018
Nelson LA, et al. - Using a new assessment based on the Information-Motivation-Behavioral skills (IMB) model of adherence, the researchers evaluated patient-reported barriers and test the theoretical model. Study participants completed a card sorting task to determine barriers to adherence, a survey, and a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test. Forgetting doses, thinking brand name medicine works better than generic medicine, not seeing an immediate benefit, and feeling burned out with taking diabetes medicine were the most frequently reported barriers. Patient-specific barriers to diabetes medication adherence could be identified by this assessment task. Using this assessment, interventions targeting patient-specific barriers could improve adherence and HbA1c.
