Are obesity indices useful for detecting subclinical atheromatosis in a middle-aged population?

Obesity Facts Feb 29, 2020

Sánchez E, Sánchez M, Betriu À, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving 6,809 middle-aged individuals (mean age, 57 [53–63] years) with low to moderate cardiovascular risk, researchers determined and contrasted the discriminatory performance of obesity indices to better estimate the risk of subclinical atheromatosis. Participants were recruited between January 2015 and December 2017 from 31 primary health care centres in the ILERVAS project. Obesity indices in a large cohort of middle-aged individuals are linked to subclinical atheromatosis, in particular in men. The results were less conclusive with respect to the females. The indices could not detect the presence of arterial plaque, however, so it is unlikely that they will be definitive when used in isolation.
