Anticholinergic/sedative drug burden predicts worse memory acquisition in older racially/ethnically diverse patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Sep 19, 2019

Margolis SA, Sears MZ, Daiello LA, et al. – Researchers evaluated 105 adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) for the cross-sectional relationships between total Drug Burden Index and an age-adjusted analog with the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Current sedative/anticholinergic use was reported in one-third of the participants, indicating its prevalence in this diverse T2D patient population. Researchers observed the drug burden to be negatively correlated with RBANS Immediate Memory, but no other indices. Following adjustment for covariates, greater drug burden was correlated with worse memory acquisition among older adults only.
