Antibacterial envelope to prevent cardiac implantable electronic devices
New England Journal of Medicine May 22, 2019
Tarakji KG, et al. - The researchers performed this randomized, controlled clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of an absorbable, antibiotic-eluting envelope in order to reduce the incidence of infection associated with cardiac implantable electronic device (CIEDs) procedures. There were 6,983 patients selected for this study out of which 3,495 selected to the envelope group and 3,488 to the control group. With the use of an antibacterial envelope, researchers found fewer incidences of major CIED infections vs standard-of-care infection-prevention strategies alone with also fewer complications.
