Anosognosia of financial ability in mild cognitive impairment
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Apr 14, 2019
Gerstenecker A, et al. - Researchers investigated the everyday financial problems and skills in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), as if people with MCI can recognize that declines regarding financial capacity are happening. One hundred eighty-six older adults classified as cognitively healthy, MCI likely due to AD, and mild AD dementia were studied. Observations revealed a particular risk for financial missteps among people with MCI. Like people with AD, these patients also require supervision of their financial skills and activities. Partner reports disclosed higher levels of difficulties in financial skill in study participants vs the same study participants’ self-reporting. Participant scores on a performance-based measure of financial capacity were better correlated with study partner-ratings than participant self-ratings.
