Androgen deprivation therapy and depression in men with prostate cancer treated with definitive radiation therapy
Cancer Mar 18, 2019
Deka R, et al. - In a homogeneous group of men with prostate cancer (PC) treated with definitive radiation therapy (RT), researchers investigated whether androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) use is associated with the development of depression, use of outpatient psychiatric services, inpatient psychiatric services, and suicide after controlling for multiple sources of selection bias. In this retrospective, observational cohort study of 39,965 veterans with PC, they identified 934 patients who were newly diagnosed with depression, 7,825 patients used outpatient psychiatric services, 358 patients used inpatient psychiatric services, and 54 patients committed suicide. ADT use in these patients was linked to an increased risk of depression and increased use of outpatient psychiatric services via the multivariable competing risks regression model. Evidence thereby suggests there are long-term risks for psychiatric health in the treatment of PC with ADT.
