Anatomical and clinical predictors of valve dysfunction and aortic dilation in bicuspid aortic valve disease
Heart Sep 08, 2017
Evangelista A, et al. - This study determined the determinants of early valvular dysfunction and proximal aorta dilation in bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). Findings suggested that normofunctional valves were more prevalent in BAV without raphe. In BAV-RN, aortic stenosis was more frequent and related to some cardiovascular risk factors, whereas, aortic regurgitation (AR) was found to be associated with male sex and sigmoid prolapse. The most commonly dilated segment was ascending aorta but one-third of patients had aortic root dilation, which was associated with AR. Remarkably, BAV-RL increased the risk for dilation of the proximal aorta, whereas BAV-RN spared this area.
