Analysis of the association between eating behaviors and weight loss after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy

Obesity Facts Nov 28, 2019

Nikiforova I, et al. - Researchers examined how abnormal eating behaviors (EB) influence the outcome of sleeve gastrectomy. In this prospective study, they divided 300 patients, who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) from 2013 to 2014, into 4 groups: binge eaters, snack eaters, sweet eaters, and volume eaters. After 3 years, there appeared no significant change in the number of binge eaters, however, an 8.9% increase in snack eaters, a 12.9% increase in sweet eaters, and a 17.2% increase in healthy eating habits were evident. Observations revealed a decrease in overeaters following LSG; however, there was promotion of a switch between other unhealthy EB after LSG. Snack eaters and sweet eaters increased significantly, although this increase had no impact on weight loss in the midterm follow-up. After LSG, the worsening of eating habits is a common fact.
