Analysis of loss to follow up in 4,099 multidrug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis patients
European Respiratory Journal May 14, 2019
Walker IF, et al. - Since treatment success in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) was poor in part due to loss-to-follow-up (LFU) in TB programs of two or more consecutive months, researchers explored when LFU occurs by month of MDR-TB treatment and patient-level risk factors related to LFU. They analyzed data of 4,099 MDR-TB patients from 22 countries. The initial phase of treatment was when most LFU was seen (75% in the first 11 months). The following major risk factors were found to be related to LFU: age 36-50 years vs age 0–25 years, being HIV+ vs HIV-, on an individualized treatment regimen vs standardized regimen and a recorded serious adverse event vs no serious adverse event.
