An individualized prediction model for long-term lung function trajectory and risk of COPD in the general population
Chest Sep 28, 2019
Chen W, et al. - Researchers used data from the Framingham Offspring Cohort to construct as well as validate an individualized prediction model for lung function trajectory and risk of airflow limitation in the general population. The participants were 4,167 in total, with age ≥ 20 years, and had ≥ 2 valid spirometry evaluations. For validation, 2 large, independent multi-center cohorts were used. The model incorporated 20 common predictors and was able to explain 79% of the variation in forced expiratory volume at 1 second (FEV1) reduction in the derivation cohort. FEV1 decline was predicted with low error and the risk of airflow limitation was predicted with high discriminative power by the developed model in the validation cohorts. Overall, the findings revealed the accuracy of the individualized predictor for foretelling long-term lung function trajectories and the risk of airflow limitation in the general population. People at higher risk of COPD can be identified using this model.
