American trypanosomiasis and Chagas disease: Sexual transmission
International Journal of Infectious Diseases Apr 16, 2019
Gomes C, et al. - Routes of Trypanosoma cruzi parasite transmission and the distribution of Chagas disease, now found across five continents, was evaluated by reviewing the literature to assess the sexual transmission of American trypanosomiasis and Chagas disease in humans. As per evidence gained, Chagas disease can be transmitted sexually. This in combination with the migration of those with Chagas disease to formerly non-endemic countries and more travel to endemic countries seem to have implications for public health. They recommend enhanced screening of blood supplies and prenatal care to limit congenital spread.
