Altered macular microvasculature in Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders
American Journal of Ophthalmology May 17, 2018
Kwapong WR, et al. - Authors assessed macular microvascular changes in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) by using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) and ascertained their correlations with neuroaxonal structural damage evaluated with Spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT). In NMOSD patients, decreased microvascular density correlated with the worsening of their visual acuity. In these patients, a possible contribution of retinal microvascular alteration to neuroaxonal was seen by the correlation between microvascular impairment and neuroaxonal thinning. A new path of study was offered by OCT-A with measurable analysis. Experts noted a likeliness of it being useful as an objective biomarker for detecting microvascular impairment in NMOSD.
