Alcohol consumption patterns in young adults with type 1 diabetes: The SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Study
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Feb 05, 2020
Roberts AJ, Law JR, Suerken CK, et al. - Via obtaining data from 602 SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Study candidates age ≥ 18 yrs with T1D from December 2011 to June 2015, researchers reported alcohol consumption behaviors of young adults with T1D and explored connections between alcohol consumption and diabetes-related clinical markers. Based on reported consumption in the past 30 days, candidates were characterized as alcohol non-drinkers (n = 269), drinkers but non-binge drinkers (n = 167), or binge drinkers (n = 166). Data reported that 55% of participants reported alcohol consumption and 27.6% of participants reported binge drinking. Neither binge drinking nor non-binge drinking was linked to HbA1c or severe hypoglycemic events relative to non-drinkers after adjusting for demographic characteristics. Findings suggested an association of binge drinking with higher HDL, lower systolic blood pressure, and a lower waist:height ratio compared with non-drinkers. Compared with the general United States population and previously reported rates in adults with T1D, young adults with T1D in the SEARCH cohort reported comparable alcohol use but higher rates of binge drinking.
