Alcohol and delirium tremens: Effects of average number of drinks per day and beverage type

Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Mar 07, 2019

Sørensen HJ, et al. - Researchers investigated the associations of alcohol intake amount and beverage type with the risk of delirium tremens (DT) in this longitudinal cohort study consisting of 3,582 alcohol-dependent men and women aged 19–82 years without previous DT. Findings suggested an association of an average number of drinks per day of 20–30 or > 30 with hazard ratios of 1.38 and 1.64 relative to the reference category (1–9 drinks). Independent of the amount consumed and covariates (age, gender, civil status, and work status), there appeared to be an association of beverage type (spirits vs mixed alcohol) with a hazard ratio of 1.63. An increased risk was noted in robust correlation with the male sex.
