Age-targeted tuberculosis vaccination in China and implications for vaccine development: A modeling study
The Lancet Global Health Jan 28, 2019
Harris RC, et al. - In this study, researchers assessed the data to elucidate the potential advantage of new tuberculosis vaccines and different implementation policies in China targeting teenagers (15–19 years) or older adults (60–64 years) by the year 2050. They implied that about 74·5% of incident tuberculosis cases in China would take place in individuals of age 65 years or older and most of them would be due to reactivation instead of new infection. They noted a decline in incidence and mortality rates among the elders when all vaccine profiles were delivered. They also noticed a deflection in lower number of needed to vaccinate (NNV) per case and per death in older as compared to adolescents. They suggested that an alternative post-infection vaccine to elders would be essential to maximize the impact at population-level and would also contribute towards achieving WHO goals.
