Age-dependent prognostic impact of paroxysmal vs sustained atrial fibrillation on the incidence of cardiac death and heart failure hospitalization (the Fushimi AF Registry)
The American Journal of Cardiology Aug 11, 2019
An Y, Ogawa H, Esato M, et al. - Researchers used the Fushimi AF Registry, which is a Japanese community-based prospective survey, to determine the link of atrial fibrillation (AF) type (paroxysmal vs sustained AF) with the incidences of cardiac death and heart failure (HF) hospitalization in the overall population and in age subgroups (≤ 74, 75-84, and ≥ 85 years). The enrollment of participants was initiated in March 2011. by the end of November 2017, 4,304 patients had follow-up data available. A higher incidence of the composite of cardiac death and HF hospitalization was reported in relation to sustained AF vs paroxysmal AF, with distinctive links observed based on age subgroups. Only the younger AF patients (≤ 74 years), but not the older subgroups, exhibited this link, in age subgroups.
