Admission braden skin score independently predicts mortality in cardiac intensive care patients

Mayo Clinic Proceedings Oct 07, 2019

Jentzer JC, Anavekar NS, Brenes-Salazar JA, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study that involved consecutive unique adult patients (n = 9,552) admitted to a single tertiary care referral hospital cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) from January 1, 2007, through December 31, 2015, who had a Braden skin score (BSS) recorded on CICU admission, researchers ascertained whether a low BSS, highlighting heightened risk for skin pressure injury, would prognosticate lower survival in CICU individuals following adjusting for illness severity and comorbidities. Admission BSS was inversely related to hospital mortality, along with increased short-term mortality as a function of declining admission BSS. Admission BSS persisted to be inversely correlated with hospital mortality following adjustment for illness severity and comorbidities using multivariable analysis. Among hospital survivors, following adjustment for illness severity and comorbidities, admission BSS was inversely correlated with postdischarge mortality. Therefore, when added to authorized multiparametric illness severity scores among contemporary CICU individuals, the admission BSS, a simple inexpensive bedside nursing evaluation probably highlighting frailty and overall illness acuity, was independently related to hospital and postdischarge mortality.
