Adherence to Mediterranean diet and prognosis in older patients scheduled to undergo cardiac resynchronization therapy
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Nov 02, 2019
Dominguez-Rodriguez A, et al. - Researchers performed this study in older patients scheduled to undergo cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), to determine clinical outcomes at 12 months post-CRT implantation in relation to adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) in these individuals (n = 284, mean age = 73 ± 3 years). Adherence to the MedDiet was shown by 159 (55.9%) patients. A combined endpoint, including cardiovascular death, cardiac transplantation or decompensated heart failure, at 12 months post-CRT implantation was considered as the primary outcome. A higher proportion of adherent patients to the MedDiet was seen among individuals who did not develop the combined endpoint vs those who developed the combined endpoint. The adherence to the MedDiet was identified as a protective and significant predictor of the combined endpoint, following adjustment by likely confounders. Findings revealed an inverse link of adherence to the MedDiet with outcome in older patients post-CRT.
