Adherence to continuous positive airway pressure in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: A ten year real life study
Respiratory Medicine Apr 11, 2019
Zampogna E, et al. - Via this retrospective data analysis of 147 patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), researchers evaluated the predictive factors at 12 month and 10 year adherence to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). Based on CPAP nighttime use during the first year, two groups of patients were defined: Poor Adherence (PA) group that included 61 patients using the device less < 4.5 h, and Good Adherence (GA) group, including 86 patients using the device ≥4.5 h. PA group comprised significantly younger patients who had greater Body Mass Index (BMI) and needed more unscheduled visits during the first year. Independent of adherence to therapy after one year of use, most of the patients with OSA undergoing periodical controls were still under CPAP ten years after prescription. There could be a link between use of nasal mask and better adherence.
