Adherence to antidiabetic medication and factors associated with non-adherence among patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus in two regional hospitals in Cameroon
BMC Endocrine Disorders Apr 08, 2019
Aminde LN, et al. - Among 195 patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers evaluated the level of adherence and issues prompting non-adherence to antidiabetic medication. In the diabetic clinics of the Limbe and Bamenda Regional Hospitals in Cameroon, a hospital-based cross-sectional study was performed among adult patients receiving care. Data revealed a 54.4% prevalence of non-adherence to medication in these patients. The most frequent reasons given by participants as reasons for their non-adherence to medication were forgetfulness, lack of finances, disappearance of symptoms, and being too busy. In this investigation, adherence to anti-diabetic drugs is low, with over half of the patients reporting non-adherence. Considering the looming epidemic of diabetes, urgent interventions are needed to address this problem.
