Achievement of weight loss in patients with overweight during dietetic treatment in primary healthcare
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Dec 11, 2019
Verberne LDM, et al. - In this study, patients with overweight who were treated by dietitians in Dutch primary healthcare were assessed for weight change, and patient characteristics associated with it were investigated. Researchers conducted an observational study including data from 56 dietetic practices and 4,722 patients with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2. Within an average timeframe of 5 months, the mean treatment time was 3 hours. Overall, patients showed a mean weight change of -3.5% of their initial body weight, and a quarter of the patients attained a weight loss of 5% or more, despite the fact that the recommended treatment duration of at least 1 year was not met by most of the patients. Findings suggest that patients with overweight achieve modest weight reduction in correlation to undergoing the dietetic treatment in primary healthcare. Most patients did not achieve weight loss goals possibly due to low treatment adherence.
