Accuracy of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for screening to detect major depression: Individual participant data meta-analysis
BMJ Apr 12, 2019
Levis B, et al. – Researchers assessed the accuracy of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for major depression detection in this meta-analysis of individual participant data. A total of 58 studies (total n=17,357; major depression cases n=2,312) were included in this analysis. Overall, the investigators noted that PHQ-9 sensitivity appears to be equivalent to that of validated diagnostic interviews, but may be less specific to younger patients than older patients. Compared with semi-structured diagnostic interviews, PHQ-9 sensitivity was higher than in previous conventional meta-analyses combining reference standards. A cut-off score of ≥ 10 maximized combined sensitivity and specificity overall and for subgroups.
