Accelerated pulsed high-fluence corneal cross-linking for progressive keratoconus

American Journal of Ophthalmology Aug 20, 2020

Gore DM, Leucci MT, Koay SY, et al. - In this prospective interventional case series involving 870 patients (1,192 eyes), researchers reported on 2-year results of accelerated corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) in progressive ectasia utilizing the Avedro KXL system. Patients attending Moorfields Eye Hospital after CXL were involved. Corneas with a minimum stromal thickness < 375 μm have been excluded. Data on 12-month and 24-month follow-up were available for 543 and 213 patients respectively (mean age 25.4 ± 6.6) years). Mean keratometry remained unchanged at 24-months in mild cones (Kmax < 55 D). In 98.3% of eyes, keratometric stabilization was confirmed. Findings suggested that accelerated pulsed CXL is a safe, effective, and refractively neutral intervention (at two-years) to stop the progression of the disease in keratoconus.
