Accelerated loss of antigravity muscles is associated with mortality in patients with COPD

Respiration Apr 06, 2020

Tanimura K, Sato S, Sato A, et al. - Given a strong link of low antigravity muscle mass with poor prognosis in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), researchers explored the factors related to the longitudinal loss of antigravity muscles. They also determined if prognosis is negatively influenced by the accelerated loss of these muscles. This inquiry was part of a prospective observational study at Kyoto University. Stable men suffering from COPD who had longitudinal quantitative CT analysis of the cross-sectional area of the erector spinae muscles at an interval of 3 years were enrolled in this study. Overall 102 stable male COPD patients were assessed. Findings revealed a link between frequent exacerbations and the loss of antigravity muscles in COPD patients. A poor prognosis was reported in relation to the accelerated loss of antigravity muscles.
