ABO blood groups and hepatitis B virus infection: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMJ Open Feb 07, 2020
Jing W, et al. - A systematic review and meta-analysis were designed to evaluate whether ABO blood groups were associated with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Researchers identified relevant studies available before 1 December 2019 by searching PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, ScienceDirect and the Cochrane Library. In this review, thirty-eight eligible articles including 241,868 HBV-infected individuals and 6,487,481 uninfected individuals were recruited. When compared with the non-B blood group, the risk of HBV infection had decreased by 8% in individuals with blood group B. The evidence showed that blood group B was correlated with a lower risk of HBV infection. Future studies are required to explain the precise role of the ABO blood group in HBV infection to address the global question of HBV infection.
