Abnormal fasting glucose increases risk of unrecognized myocardial infarctions in an elderly cohort
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Oct 12, 2018
Stacey RB, et al. - Authors assessed glucose levels as a risk factor for unrecognized myocardial infarctions (UMIs) in study participants aged ≥ 65 years enrolled in the Cardiovascular Health Study (N=4,355). They found that, particularly in the diabetic range, fasting glucose status forecasted UMI during 6 years of follow-up in elderly adults. After adjustment HR for UMI in impaired fasting glucose (IFG), they did not observe any greater likeliness to experience a UMI in those with IFG vs those with normal fasting glucose (NFG). However, those with DM were more likely than those with NFG to experience a UMI. Findings did not suggest a significant association of the 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test with UMI.
