Ablation of atrial fibrillation in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: Treatment strategy, characteristics of consecutive atrial tachycardia and long‐term outcome
Journal of the American Heart Association Jan 22, 2021
Dinshaw L, Münkler P, Schäffer B, et al. - Researchers examined the characteristics of recurrent atrial arrhythmias as well as the long‐term result of patients suffering from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) receiving atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. They analyzed 65 HCM cases (aged 64.5±9.9 years, 42 [64.6%] men) managed with AF ablation. The presence of paroxysmal, persistent AF, and a primary atrial tachycardia (AT) was evident in 13 (20.0%), 51 (78.5%), and 1 (1.5%) patients, respectively. Findings demonstrated the effectiveness of AF ablation for long‐term rhythm control in patients with HCM, and a good clinical outcome was particularly achieved in patients with paroxysmal AF receiving pulmonary vein isolation. In HCM, ATs following AF ablation were frequently noted. Persistent AF ablation conferred freedom of atrial arrhythmia in a reasonable number of patients even though antiarrhythmic drug therapy use remained high.
