A superiority of viral load over CD4 cell count when predicting mortality in HIV patients on therapy
BMC Infectious Diseases Feb 21, 2019
Shoko C, et al. - Researchers investigated and compared the utility of CD4 cell count and viral load markers in the monitoring of HIV/AIDS progression. They fitted time-homogeneous Markov models, one on CD4 cell count monitoring and the other on HIV RNA monitoring. Assessment of these models suggested viral load monitoring as a better predictor of HIV/AIDS progression than CD4 cell count. This study suggests that patients take more time to achieve a normal CD4 cell count and less time to achieve an undetectable viral load. However, with the achievement of normal CD4 cell count, reduction in mortality risks was observed. This suggests the utility of both viral load monitoring and CD4 count monitoring in assessing valuable information that can be used to enhance the life expectancy of patients living with HIV.
