A rare invasion route for differentiated thyroid carcinoma: The tracheoesophageal common party wall
The Laryngoscope Nov 29, 2019
Sims JR, et al. - Researchers conducted a review of patients with thyroid cancer invading the aerodigestive tract. In this work, they described three cases of invasive thyroid cancer who presented 4 to 6 years after the initial thyroidectomy. Their original pathology was indicative of positive margins near the recurrent laryngeal nerve and TEG. In one case, a partial tracheal resection with a stair-step reconstruction was performed; in the other cases, total laryngopharyngectomy was performed. Based on this work, they recommend surgeons to be prepared to conduct oncologically complete resections at the primary surgery so that significant clinical consequences requiring aggressive surgery could be avoided.
