A prospective long‐term follow‐up study of optic disc pit maculopathy treated with pars plana vitrectomy, drainage of subretinal fluid and peeling of internal limiting membrane
Acta Ophthalmologica May 22, 2020
Makdoumi K, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective, consecutive, noncomparative follow‐up study to characterize the long‐term outcomes of surgical repair of patients with optic disc pit maculopathy (ODP‐M). Study participants included 12 patients with ODP‐M treated by pars plana vitrectomy, peeling of internal limiting membrane followed by gas tamponade. Subretinal fluid (SRF) has been drained through a retinotomy with no laser photocoagulation in 11 eyes. The median age at surgery was 20 years (range 9–60 years) in this analysis. No statistically significant difference was found in visual acuity between patients before and after surgery. In this long-term ODP-M final healing outcome study, however, a relatively large proportion of complications were associated with retinotomies. The authors conclude that drainage of SRF is likely to be avoided as it appears to contribute little to the resorption rate of SRF and appears to be associated with unnecessary risks.
