A pilot study to screen for poor academic performance in children with sickle cell disease in the outpatient setting
Pediatric Blood & Cancer Mar 04, 2020
Karkoska K, et al. - Through the administration of a standardized screening tool at the clinic visit, researchers identified young children with sickle cell disease (SCD) at high risk for poor academic performance (PAP). Parents of 20 patients had been requested to complete the Behavior Assessment System for Children, 3rd edition (BASC-3) Parent Rating Scale. According to results, four of 20 individuals were found to be at risk by the BASC-3. A significant association between those with a history of PAP and RS was found. A parent-directed screening tool can detect children with SCD needing additional help from the school. Further prospective studies are required in order to understand the associations found between hemoglobin, reticulocyte count, and hydroxyurea treatment and risk for PAP.
