A pair-wise meta-analysis highlights circular RNAs as potential biomarkers for colorectal cancer
BMC Cancer Oct 22, 2019
Li C, et al. - Researchers examined the diagnostic accuracy, prognostic utility, as well as clinicopathologic link of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in colorectal cancer (CRC), via this meta-analysis of the relevant original articles published in English and explored through a systematic search of online databases. This analysis included 13 studies with 1,430 patients with CRC. They found correlations of abnormally expressed circRNAs with tumor diameter, differentiation, lymphatic metastasis, distant metastasis, TNM stage, and depth of invasion. For distinguishing patients with CRC from those without CRC, a summary area under the curve of 0.79 was generated for circRNA, corresponding to a weighted sensitivity of 0.77, specificity of 0.67, and diagnostic odds ratio of 7.52. Correlation between highly expressed circRNAs and significantly worse overall survival (OS) was noted, whereas a link was identified between lower expression of circRNAs and prolonged OS. Findings revealed the possible ability of abnormally expressed circRNAs to serve as auxiliary biomarkers facilitating CRC diagnosis, as well as promising utility as prognostic biomarkers for predicting survival.
