A nationwide population-based study of social demographic factors, associated diseases and mortality of keratoconus patients in Denmark from 1977 to 2015
Acta Ophthalmologica Jul 15, 2019
Bak-Nielsen S, et al. - Researchers examined Danish patients diagnosed with keratoconus (n = 2679) to analyze sociodemographic factors, associated diseases and survival. These patients were matched to 10 persons without keratoconus (n = 26,790). After adjustment, more than threefold higher odds of keratoconus were observed in non-Europeans vs Europeans. Compared with persons in a relationship, 27% higher odds and 18% lower odds of keratoconus were seen in single persons and in divorced persons, respectively. Compared with subjects living in the capital, the odds were 40% and 30% lower in persons living in cities with <500 and 500–4999 inhabitants, respectively. The reported odds of keratoconus were 68% higher in persons receiving government substitution vs self-employed. Findings revealed difference between Danish keratoconus patients and controls with respect to various sociodemographic factors. A higher risk of allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis and depression was reported in Danish keratoconus patients. In these patients, the observed mortality did not exceed that seen in controls.
