A global meta-analysis on HIV, hepatitis C and hepatitis B among people who inject drugs – Do gender differences vary by country-level indicators?
The Journal of Infectious Diseases Feb 09, 2019
Leung J, et al. - Via conducting meta-analyses, researchers determined country, regional, and global prevalence of serologically-confirmed HIV, hepatitis C (anti-HCV) and hepatitis B (HBsAg) prevalence in people who inject drugs (PWID) by gender. Gender differences varied by countries and regions. Outcomes revealed a higher HIV prevalence among women than men in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia; women displayed lower anti-HCV in the Middle East and North Africa and East and Southeast Asia. However, there is between and within regional variation. In countries where women are at higher risks, gender-sensitive harm reduction services are required for the particularly marginalized population of women who inject drugs.
