A fully magnetically levitated left ventricular assist device — Final report

New England Journal of Medicine Apr 29, 2019

Mehra MR, et al. – In this final report, researchers compared a centrifugal-flow left ventricular assist device with an axial-flow device in patients with advanced-stage heart failure. Study participants included 1,028 enrolled patients with advanced heart failure who were randomized to receive either centrifugal-flow pump (n=516) or axial-flow pump (n=512), regardless of the intended goal of use (bridge to transplantation or destination therapy). According to findings, a fully magnetically levitated centrifugal-flow left ventricular assist device was linked to less frequent need for pump replacement vs an axial-flow device, and was superior to replace or remove a malfunctioning device with survival free of disabling stroke or reoperation among patients with advanced heart failure. In the centrifugal-flow pump group, the number of events per patient-year for any severity stroke, major bleeding, and gastrointestinal hemorrhage was lower than in the axial-flow pump group.
