A comprehensive analysis of steroid hormones and progression of localized high-risk prostate cancer
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Mar 30, 2019
Lévesque E, et al. - Given that the impact of the systemic hormonal environment in men with localized prostate cancer undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP) on outcomes is unknown, researchers analyzed the correlation between circulating steroid metabolome with prognostic factors and progression. From 2007 to 2012, the prospective PROCURE cohort was recruited and includes 1,766 patients with localized prostate cancer with pre-RP blood samples. The levels of testosterone and androsterone in low-risk disease were higher, and risk of cancer progression was associated with adrenal precursors. Findings suggested an association of preoperative steroid metabolome with the risk of recurrence of high-risk disease in men with localized prostate cancer.
