A composite measure of caregiver burden in dementia: The Dementia Burden Scale—Caregiver
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Aug 19, 2018
Peipert JD, et al. - Researchers performed this prospective follow-up study with caregivers of persons with dementia (PWD) (N=1,091), to better capture the scope of caregiver burden by creating a composite of three existing measures that assess different health domains. Based on the Modified Caregiver Strain Index, Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire Distress Scale, and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), a composite measure (the Dementia Burden Scale—Caregiver [DBS-CG]) was created. A bifactor model and a three correlated factors model were used to assess alternative factor structures. Based on bifactor confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) model, they created a DBS-CG scale where all items were transformed to a possible range of 0 to 100, and then averaged. The DBS-CG was found to be reliable and valid, and can serve as an outcome measure to evaluate the impact of interventions to attenuate dementia caregiver burden.
