A community-based model of HIV care for men who have sex with men and transgender women in Chicago
International Journal of STD & AIDS Feb 04, 2020
Brito MO, Khosla S, Santana L, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study of men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) with HIV treated at community clinics or at a hospital-based clinic in order to compare HIV outcomes between a community-based model (CBM) vs a hospital-based model (HBM) of HIV care. Of 258 MSM and TGW, nearly half reported receipt of care in the CBM; these were more frequently African American (71% vs 59%) and uninsured (48% vs 39%) and reported more frequent use of illicit drugs (40% vs 25%). In the CBM, virologic failure (HIV viral load ≥ 200 copies/ml) was similar to a traditional HBM for MSM and TGW living with HIV, despite it served clients at greater risk for failure.
