A checklist manifesto: Effectiveness of checklist use in hands-on simulation examining competency in contrast reaction management in a randomized controlled study
American Journal of Roentgenology Jun 09, 2018
Parsian S, et al. - Using a high-fidelity hands-on simulation, researchers assessed the performance of a contrast reaction management checklist for optimal management of a contrast reaction scenario created. Study participants took written tests including multiple-choice questions 2 months prior and immediately after participating in the high-fidelity simulation scenario, which was videotaped and independently evaluated by three graders. The number of treatment errors that occur during a simulated severe contrast reaction could be reduced by a standardized contrast reaction management checklist, especially with regard to the proper administration of epinephrine and treatment of bronchospasm. Researchers suggested that such a checklist could be utilized by radiologists, technologists, and nurses to improve patient safety as a result of improved contrast reaction management and teamwork skills.
