A 3-SNP Gene Risk Score and a Metabolic Risk Score both predict hypertriglyceridemia and cardiovascular disease risk

Journal of Clinical Lipidology Mar 02, 2019

Verbeek R, et al. - Researchers assessed the link between the 3-single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) TG Gene Risk Score (GRS), Metabolic Risk Score (MetRS), triglycerides (TG) levels and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk to determine if both these scores enabled an improved CVD risk prediction. Based on 3 SNPs in LPL and APOA5 or the number of Metabolic Syndrome criteria present (maximum 5), respectively, they generated a 3-SNP GRS and MetRS using the EPIC-Norfolk cohort which included 20,074 subjects. Findings revealed linear associations of 3-SNP GRS and MetRS with plasma TG levels. A positive link between the 3-SNP GRS and the risk of CVD was noted. Independent of the MetRS, an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 1.35 was noted for the highest vs the lowest GRS. An adjusted HR of 2.03 was calculated for the highest vs the lowest MetRS. Overall, increased plasma TG levels and increased risk for CVD were observed in association with both the 3-SNP GRS and the MetRS.
