30-day mortality following surgery for spinal epidural abscess: Incidence, risk factors, predictive algorithm, and associated complications
Spine Apr 03, 2019
Du JY, et al. - Investigators studied 1094 individuals to examine the incidence and timing of mortality for spinal epidural abscess (SEA) surgery and also to classify the risk factors for mortality and complications connected with mortality. They recorded the 30-day mortality rate following surgery for SEA, 3.7%. They found the occurrence of the majority of modalities within 2 weeks (mortalities that occurred within 30 days of surgery). They included older age, diabetes, hypertension, respiratory comorbidities, renal comorbidities, metastatic cancer, and thrombocytopenia under independent risk factors for mortality. Based on the number of risk factors, they observed 0.3% to 37.5% of risk for mortality. Association of septic shock, cardiac arrest, and pneumonia with mortality were also reported.
